Innerglass Windows For STC Rating

The Simonton Daylight Max has an STC rating of 33 with the sound package or 35 with the sound package and laminated glass. Since I'm not going to be in the house that long and don't want to spend tons of money, I may go with interior window inserts that will reduce the noise.

I've done a bunch of research and they seem like the inserts provide good noise reduction at a lower price. Any opinion?

Lisa, the inserts would definitely save you money and help you quite a bit with noise, depending on the quality of your existing windows. Inserts are a pain for opening and closing the windows though.

Indow windows from Portland Oregon make a good insert and they should have a rep in your area.

Thanks! I have actually looked into Indow inserts but they do not have any operable/openable ones. If I had more room in my house, that wouldn't be an issue, but since I do like to open my windows during the day, it would entail finding some place to put the inserts where my dogs wouldn't knock into them, so that won't work.

There is another company I've looked at, Innerglass, that has storm windows that can be opened, so I'm looking into that.

I wish there was some way for me to check the STC rating of my current windows so I could compare to the projected STC of ~33.

Thanks again for your replies!

Lisa, I would think your original windows would be around an STC rating of 18, but I could certainly be off :)

Thanks! I ended up speaking with the owner of Innerglass for a quite a while on Friday. He seems like quite a nice guy. He stated that the STC with the Innerglass double hung inserts (openable) would be somewhere in the 40s.

That seems too good to be true. But as stated on their website, he said their inserts were used during that that huge Boston construction project years ago. So I will likely be trying a few of the inserts. The downside is that it will not help the sale value of my home like new windows would. But the upside is that if they work, I probably won't feel such a need to move.

Plus even with shipping they cost less than 1/2 of new windows and offer nearly double the noise reduction (optimistically).

If I get them I will send you a follow up on the noise reduction!

Thanks again,
