Double Pane Window Basics

A double pane window is made up of two panes of glass with a sealed space in between. This space is filled with a gas such as argon or krypton, which acts as an insulator to reduce heat transfer. Collectively, this is known as the insulated glass unit or the IGU. Double pane windows are known for their energy efficiency, as they help to keep homes cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, thus reducing the need for heating and cooling systems.

Cost And Size Of Windows

When it comes to installing double pane windows, there are a number of factors that can affect cost. One of the main factors is the size of the window. Larger windows will naturally cost more than smaller ones, and the cost will also vary depending on whether the window is a standard size or a custom size. Custom or upgraded glass will also add to the cost of the window.

Framing Material

Another factor that can affect the cost of double pane windows is the framing material. There are a variety of framing materials to choose from, including vinyl, wood clad, composite, fiberglass and aluminum. Each material has its own pros and cons, and the cost will vary depending on the type of material chosen.

Location Of The Home

The location of the home will certainly affect the project cost. Homes in colder climates may require windows with a higher insulation rating, which will cost more than windows with a lower insulation rating. Additionally, homes in areas with high humidity may require windows with a special coating -- a high VT, which can sometimes add to the cost.

How Accurate Are Double Pane Cost Calculators?

While window cost calculators can be useful tools for estimating the cost of double pane windows, it is important to remember that they are only an estimate. The actual cost of the windows may be higher or lower depending on a number of factors that are not taken into account by the calculator -- gas fills, grids, glass upgrades, glass offsets, custom frame colors, and the list goes on!

Additional Cost Factors

In addition to cost, there are a number of other factors to consider when deciding whether or not to install double pane windows. One of the main benefits of double pane windows is their energy efficiency, which can result in significant cost savings over time. However, homeowners should also consider factors such as the durability of the windows, their ability to block out noise, and their aesthetic appeal.

Double Hung Windows Cost

Hi there! So I am looking to replace 2 26 x 60 bedroom windows and two 36 x 36 basement windows. I have two quotes thus far and was wondering if these prices seem fair? Which is better do you think? Thanks so much! They are double-hungs by the way.

Vinylmax Edison: $979 each bedroom, $949.00 each

Project Total = $3856

Barrington Softlite: (they didn't breakdown the price for me)

Project Total = $3479

John - Homeowner - from 2023

[Site Editor's Answer]

John, the Vinylmax Edison is the better window over the Barrington Softlite by about the price difference you havethere in your bids. So you are kind of getting what you pay for either way. I would make the decision here based on how good or bad the companies doing the install. That would be the bigger difference for me.
