Julie, I'm not sure I like either of those bids. Seems expensive for what you are getting.

Lindsay Window Prices vs. Pella

I swear this is worse than buying a car. We've actually gotten a few quotes, including $13,900 from Home Depot for Simonton and $10,900 for Alside Sheffield. For Home Depot were were worried about the install, and we weren't thrilled with Alside although that contractor had a good reputation for installs.

The Lindsay/Pella place seemed to be a combination of the two. We liked the Lindsay windows (we are on a budget, as you can tell), and the contractor also has a good rep for service and is able to do interior framing for us (not included in the $13,400). We had an in-store quote of $10,300 from a Sunrise dealer for pocket installation, and their warranty for work is only two years. We have yet another contractor coming out Thursday.

I am tired of this process, but I do appreciate your website. It has helped a lot!

Lindsay Lexington Price Quote

My final quote was for Lindsay Lexington brand window. All triple pane, (except the largest picture window double pane), triple glazed LoE 366, Argon filled and either the Air Leakage or U-factor of 0.17. The quoted price is $17,200.

This is for 15 Double Hung and 2 Picture Windows.

Lindsay Pinnacle Windows Costs

Here is the dilemma, upstairs windows. All double hung aluminum wrapped with Larson storms. We have energy saver inserts on the inside (very cool, see their website) first year with them and they did help the frost on the inside sash. Since we moved in 32 years ago all the second story windows in the winter are wet and when really cold, thick with frost. We discovered the 2 north side edges are rotted under the wrap. We have had 2 quotes from 2 companies so far:

First company came in with inserts, said it's better to leave the frame intact repair what is rotted and replace with inserts, they quoted for 9 double hung:

Lindsay Pinnacle 9,600

Unlimited 7,900

Both vinyl with added cost of 85.00 per hour to replace rotting.

[Site Editor's Answer]

Tom and Michele, it sounds to me like your upstairs windows need to be replaced due to normal damage and rot to the frames over 30 years. If it were me, I wouldn't go with inserts, I'd do full replacements and make sure that any rot or damage was properly handled and replaced during the replacement project.

I would avoid wood windows -- you're going to have the same issues 10 years down the road with wood, which typically only carry a 10 to 15 year warranty anyway (there is a reason the warranty on a wood window is not as strong as vinyl). Wood is an organic material that expands and contracts with the extreme shifts in temperature that are going to occur in Minnesota in the winter. Other materials do as well, but not nearly as much as wood.
