BF Rich Horizon vs. ProVia Aspect

Hi - I have to decide between two companies for window replacement (double hung vinyl) in a condominium that I own & rent in Alexandria VA.

The choice is between ProVia Aspect (R&RBlinds - 5 year labor) & BFRich Horizon (Nova Installations - 10 year labor). I already have one of these that was installed in 2010 after a breakin.

I have been told that the ProVia are the better product and that the warrenty doesn't matter cause both have lifetime warrenties on the windows.

Would love to have your thoughts.

[Site Editor's Answer]

Juli, I think you are correct that the ProVia Aspect is the better of the two mid range window options. I know we don't see a lot of information on BF Rich, but I can tell you what their numbers are for the Vintage 5000 vinyl window (which I think should be their mid range offering and therefore would provide the best apples-to-apples comparison).

The double hung gets the following: U-value .29, SHGC .21, VT .50, .16 Air Infiltration. That air infiltration is not impressive, but the U-factor is decent. I would compare those numbers to the ProVia Aspect and see how they compare. My notion is that the ProVia is going to be better on the U-value, but more importantly on the AI.

BF Rich Window Review

BF Rich windows are dark and have a thick frame. In harsher climates those might be beneficial, but for most places I think they're overkill and it just leaves you with a clunky window. They don't let as much light in as their competitors, which is a big deal if you want a lot of natural light in your home. When you add grids, which most people want, then it makes them even darker. You can find better looking windows at a lower price that let in more light.

Bulky Frame

Because I live near their plant, a lot of local stores carry BF Rich windows. Their double hungs are one of the bulkiest I've seen. The welds are sloppy and their designs all look dated and old. I haven't really heard anything bad about their performance, but to me they are so unattractive I couldn't recommend them. Take a look at Champion, which are more expensive, but they are a solid company.

Happy Homeowner

Last year we put in several new windows and we picked BF Rich. I like them a lot, the salesman we talked to was very helpful and they weren't too expensive. The side of the house we put them on gets a lot of glare and they really cut down on it. I've heard some people say they don't like the look of them, but we have an older house and they look perfect on it. I guess it depends on the style of your home and what you like.

Installation Issues

I just had four BF Richs windows put in. Two were fine, but the other two have already driven me crazy. The two in the kitchen have been a lot of trouble. One wouldn't lock, and we tried several tricks that would work for a while before we finally got it fixed. I had to push on the bottom of the window to get them to close. Then we tried keeping it locked for a few days so it could "mold" to the right shape. The problem now is the kitchen windows leak every time we get heavy rain. The installer looked at them and says he can't find anything wrong. Well, he should have come when I called him and everything was wet. I don't think it's the window, I think it's the install, but I'm not happy with them.

Customer Complaint

We had BF Rich windows in our last house and they were awful. They made this noise every time even the smallest wind blew. It was like living in a haunted house. And ladybugs would get behind the screen, and if we opened the windows they wold end up all over the house. I don't mind ladybugs but I don't like having thousands of them all over my house. And when we close the bottom half of the window, the top would slide down just a couple inches, so if you forgot to check it you'd end up running the air conditioning with the window open for hours. We had the installer out and he couldn't fix it, and then we had someone else come out too and he couldn't fix them. Eventually we just gave up and dealt with it until we moved, but it was awful.

Wheaton Door & Glass

When we bought our house it had these hideous thermapane windows and we were so glad to replace them with BF Rich ones. We had them installed by Wheaton Door and Glass, and they did a good job. They got all 20 windows done in one day. The windows look good and they really cut down on the sounds from outside. The installers did make kind of a mess of the openings, and they used a lot of caulk and did a rather messy job of fixing it. All in all, I'm satisfied but I wish they'd left it looking a little neater.
