Marvin Ultimate
The Marvin Ultimate is a top end line of custom wood frames. Many installers would say it's one of the best wood windows available. Wood choices include white oak, mahogany, douglas pine, fir, and cherry. which offers easy customization for a unique but classic look. With a lot of upgrades and custom options offered, thia Marvin replacement wood option can easily go over $1000 per window, but a U-factor of 0.31 and a DP50 rating make it more than worth it to many contractors and homeowners.
Installed DH Pricing: $2,200

Andersen 400 Series
Andersen's 400 Series is similar to the 200 but with several upgrades. With more sizes, colors, and options to choose from, it also features better manufacturing standards. The Tilt-Wash is similar to the Tilt-Wash in the 200 Series but without the flawed sill. The Andersen Woodwright window, although it uses the same frame and sill as the Tilt-Wash, has a sash with a fibrex finish and comes in a more limited array of colors and sizes. In the 400, we definitely recommend the Woodwright option over the Tilt-Wash.
Installed DH Pricing: $2,100
Loewen StormForce Collection
Loewen's StormForce is not cheap, but if you can afford it and need the durability then it can be a great investment. The interior is very close to the Standard series, but these are designed for coastal areas that face serious weather and need a window that can handle it. The engineering is upgraded to include impact resistant glazing and laminated glass with a DP50 rating, while still offering the style and great looks that Loewen is known for. Custom Home Window Recommendations
I'm building a custom home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the plans call for 43 windows. Most of the openings are 3060 units, with a handful of larger 4070 windows mixed in. Since this is a new construction project, I'm not tied to any particular brand and can use whichever manufacturer I choose.
What I'm struggling with is figuring out the real differences between the various window types and brands. I'd like a good-to-great quality window, but I don't necessarily want to pay a premium just because a product carries a well-known name like Pella.
I'm also confused about the differences between vinyl, fiberglass, and wood-clad windows. Everyone seems to have strong opinions, but it's difficult to sort through the marketing. To be honest, I doubt these windows will ever be opened very often. We built our current home about 25 years ago, and I can count on one hand how many times those windows have been opened.
What I do know is that I don't want to repeat the problems we've had with our current windows. Several seals have failed over the years, resulting in fogged glass, and we've also dealt with condensation that damaged some of the interior sills and ledges.
So where should I start? How do I compare these options and decide what's best for a long-term home?

Anthony, sorry for the delay. Dane is dealing with a family matter, so I've been helping answer questions in the meantime.
My opinion is that the best long-term value generally comes from a premium vinyl window with a quality wood-laminate interior finish. Most modern wood windows actually use either vinyl or fiberglass cladding on the exterior, so the outside appearance and maintenance requirements are often more similar than many homeowners realize.
On the interior, wood windows typically rely on stains or protective coatings, while high-end vinyl laminates can provide a surprisingly realistic wood appearance. They aren't identical, of course, but from a few feet away many homeowners would have difficulty telling them apart.
The advantages of premium vinyl are significant: lower cost, better thermal performance, virtually no maintenance, and lifetime warranty coverage from many manufacturers. By comparison, most wood-clad windows offer warranties closer to 20 years and require more long-term upkeep.
Fiberglass is also an excellent option and offers outstanding durability and performance, but it comes at a noticeably higher price point. While fiberglass is generally less expensive than premium wood-clad windows, it isn't far behind.
For a project of your size, I would focus on finding a reputable local installer and collecting four or five bids from quality manufacturers. That's usually the best way to compare products, pricing, and installation quality side by side.
I'd also suggest reviewing my list of recommended window brands as a starting point for your research.

Editor's Advice:
Wood window options would include Andersen 400 series, Marvin Ultimate, Marvin Integrity (wood interior option), Pella Architect series, and the Jeld Wen aura last wood option.
One other option: a vinyl window with an interior laminate. All the benefits of vinyl windows with the look of a real wood species inside. They have come along ways on this front.
My favorites include: Okna, Sunrise, Soft-Lite, Polaris and Ideal. Hopefully, one or more of these brands has local companies that service your areas.

Best Wood Laminate Windows
| Window Series | Total Quote Installed | Average Installed Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Okna / Sunrise / Soft-Lite | Recommended | Premium Vinyl |
| Polaris / PGT | Recommended | Premium Vinyl |
In your opinion, what is the best mid-range or premium replacement window on the market today? I have casement windows and would like a wood-look laminate finish on the interior. I replaced one window about six years ago and the wood grain finish looked more like a sticker. It's now peeling and looks terrible.

Editor's Advice:
Jane, that's frustrating. Fortunately, interior wood laminates have improved quite a bit over the years. If you're considering a wood-grain interior finish, I would stick with manufacturers that have a strong reputation for quality laminate options.
My favorites include Okna, Sunrise, Soft-Lite, Polaris, and PGT. Hopefully one or more of these brands is available through a quality local dealer in your area.
When you meet with contractors, ask them to bring samples of the interior wood laminate finishes so you can see and feel the materials in person. The quality on today's better laminate options is impressive, but I always like hearing homeowner feedback after they've lived with them for a while.
