I have received bids from Acadia Windows, custom made in house and HomeRite #1650 picture window (?); both have vinyl frames and are low-e, tempered glass. How is it possible to compare 'apples to apples' when I know next to nothing re: windows. The estimate from HomeRite is approximately $500 less but... ! Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

Frances, I would be wary about either of these only because there is so little information on these brands. I honestly don't know anything about either one.
Where are you located? If it were me, I would get bids from companies that have lots of reviews out there that you can compare. The more visible companies also have performance data that can be compared much easier.

Wow! Thank you for being so prompt in getting back to me; maybe I could hire you! I live in Baltimore, Md. and have also contacted Anderson but it seems that getting a response is difficult. Acadia is a local firm, having been in business for a number of years. The reviews on Angie's List seem pretty positive for both companies but those are residential rather than commercial jobs. I wish it was not so confusing.

So I would still get a couple more bids and see where they fall. I am always wary about giving advice in the commercial market — it's more to less outside my realm of expertise.
