Vinyl Design vs. Soft-Lite

I just read the customer email and your response from 2016 on Vinyl Design Corp windows. As that was six years ago, would like your opinion on Vinyl Design versus Soft Lite for double-hung replacement windows.

Patti, since that single email, yours is the only other email mentioning Vinyl Design. My advise is to go with a bigger company with a proven track record. Soft-Lite is one of my favorite manufacturers and your "odds" of getting a quality window and quality installation is much higher with Soft-lite over a small regional manufacturer.

We have a quote for replacing 36 windows. Contractor has quoted "Vinyl Design" windows. Vinyl Design is a window manufacturer in Holland, OH. Can you comment on the quality of their product?

Jim, I have never heard of them before. It looks like they are a pretty small operation based on the google map pics I saw. I also checked their performance numbers on nfrc.org - it looks like their double hung window with a E366 glass and argon fills gets a U-factor of .29, SHGC of .21, VT of .42 and CR of 58. Not bad numbers, although I would love to know what the air infiltration number is, but I couldn't this anywhere.

In general, I have a hard time recommending smaller operations that I don't know much about for a couple of reasons. One, if they were really good, I would have heard of them (although there are hundreds of small window manufacturers in the U.S.). Two, larger operations typically use better machinery and have a higher consistency in terms of batch productions.

If you are going to go with Vinyl Design and I'm not saying you shouldn't, at least get some references from past customers who have had their windows for a while. Make sure they have stood up through the years and make sure that whoever is installing the windows has a good working relationship with VD so that if something does go wrong, you won't be left swaying in the wind, as they say.
