How To Measure Windows For Replacement

Explore our page on how to measure windows for replacement and find our common sense approach and tips on how on this subject. First, let me say this: in general, leave replacement window measuring to the experts. And here is why - window bids are totally free, so getting precise measurements for your home windows is effectively free. You don't have to tell the company that comes out to give you the bid that you are not going with them. Instead, you it as an opportunity to see first hand how they measure, as well as collecting a price quote (also free).

So, having given you my advice, here is how to measure windows for replacement. Take a piece of paper and pencil or your phone and write down the name of the room and then window 1, window 2, window 3, etc. Then, with a tape measure, measure the width, height, and depth of the opening. Do this twice and write each of these measurements down. As an example W = 37 1/4, H = 48, D = 4 1/2. This ought to be enough to take your measurements down to Home Depot and order windows yourself. However, I still say that it makes the most sense to get a window price bid and let the experts do their thing.

Measuring Windows For Installation

Had a window salesman come by yesterday. The windows appear to be good high quality, but the salesman only measures each window once horizontally and once vertically instead of measuring in 3 different locations for each. Also, did not open the window to measure from inside the window sill nor measure depth of the window. I asked if they were sending out some to measure again to get exact measurements and I was told no. My other complaint is that the salesmen did not know what I was asking about when I asked for the window approximations. Lastly, is this a huge red flag?

[Site Editor's Answer]

Garrie, when it comes to how to measure windows for replacement it is standard to measure width, height, and depth. Also, I do several width and height to make sure the "hole" is plumb and level. As to whether it is a red flag, that I can't say. What I will say is this: check the online reviews of this company. If their measuring is sloppy and their reviews are not stellar, don't go with them. (Check out our window terminology page for more information.)

Lead times on ordering are so backed up right now that if they screw up the measuring and ordering, you could be looking at 6 to 8 months before the right windows are installed. The overall reviews and reputation of the company would be the bigger concern for me. Alternately, I should say that the reviews/reputation should tell you if this is a quality outfit or not.
