Mezzo Windows vs Andersen

Mezzo Windows vs Andersen - how do these two options stack up against one another? First off, the Mezzo is a vinyl window made by Alside, while Andersen is a company that makes both wood-clad and composite windows. So, very different from one another to begin with. In general, Andersen makes higher quality windows and doors than Alside Windows in general and this certainly holds true for the Mezzo series.

"The Andersen 100, 200, 400 and A series will not achieve as high of energy efficiency ratings as the Mezzo. Most wood clad and composite windows simply can't compete against decent (Mezzo) to great vinyl windows."

Mezzo Windows vs Andersen

Company Information

First off, the Alside Mezzo is a single vinyl window, while Andersen is a company that makes both wood-clad windows and a composite series. So very different from one another. The Alside Mezzo window came out in 2016 as the improved and updated version of the Excalibur series. Let me start by saying this: the Excalibur was a poorly made vinyl window. The Alside Mezzo is much much improved.

I would still not put this anywhere near a top tier vinyl window, but I might put the Mezzo as a solid, mid range series. I think there is certainly a place in the market for homeowners who only need a mid range vinyl window (as long as the window is coupled with professional installation).

Andersen Windows and Doors has been in business for well over 100 years and is based out of Bayport, Minnesota. They produce three wood-clad window series and one composite window series. All of these are also available as patio sliders and some as french and entry doors.

Mezzo Details

The Mezzo is an upgraded Excalibur Series. It uses the identical frame, but has an improved sill along with a reinforced sash. Consumers like the relatively narrow frame, but contractors and installers often complain that it feels much less robust when compared with strong, beefier windows.

Ratings

The Alside Mezzo window will have a U-value of .30 and an air infiltration rating of .04. This needs some explanation though. Normally, a window with an air infiltration of .05 or below is considered excellent. From what I know, a few liberties were taken during the testing to arrive at this low air infiltration rating. That is why I consider the Alside mezzo to be a decent, but not great window.

AW&D 100, 200, 400 and A series will not achieve as high of energy efficiency ratings as the Mezzo. Wood clad series (and their 100 composite series) simply can't decent or excellent vinyl windows - this becomes more true over time as wood begins to break down.

Reputation

As a general rule of thumb, Anderson enjoys a much better reputation than Alside in the industry. I would say Alside would be considered more of a supply building grade company, while Anderson is considered more of a top tier window and door brand - especially their 400 and A series.

Because they use and manufacture different window frame materials, Alside and Anderson rarely compete against one another. Again, Alside makes vinyl windows and doors, while Anderson sells composite and wood-clad.

Cost Comparison

Alside products will run roughly 3 to 6/7 out of 10 for all vinyl window and door competitors.

Andersen will run 6 out of 10 on their 100 composite series (compared with all other composite options.) Their 200, 400, and A Series will run 8 to 10 out of 10 for all wood windows.
