Single hung windows are an operable window style that has a single lower sash that can be opened or closed vertically. This differs from double hung windows that have two sashes that can be opened - also vertically. These also differ from slider windows that open horizontally. Many contractors once considered single hung windows to be builder grade windows (poor quality basically).
However, today many window manufacturers now manufacturer high quality single hung windows. And because there is only one sash that opens and closes, many high quality single-hungs achieve really impressive energy efficiency ratings. Additionally, SHWs are often $100 less than a same sized double hung window.
