Sash Replacement Kits

I'm about to start a renovation that will include all new DH windows (including frame) on the back of the house. In the front, I'm considering a replacement for 11 DH windows. I really do not like the inserts because of how they make the window "smaller". I recently heard of sash replacement kits and am interested in knowing your thoughts on them and who has the best product in that category? We are considering Ply-Gem and Simonton for the new windows (fyi).

Bill, sash replacement is certainly one way to go, but there are some requirements to make sure the project goes well. In order for the sash replacement to be a real option, your window frames have to be a good working order. Also, make sure you find someone who handles quite a few of these and feels comfortable installer the specific sash kit you are looking at.

I've heard of successful sash replacements and some rather chilling ones too (installer didn't realize how out of plumb the window frames were because they didn't properly measure and none of the sashes fit properly). I think if you find an installer who does a lot of sash replacements, is very thorough, and knows a brand or a manufacturer that he really likes and feels really comfortable using, then you should be good.

I don't have a list of who offers them, I know that Jeld Wen, Hurd, Marvin do.

In terms of replacements, both Ply Gem and Simonton offer models that I like and some others that I don't really care for. Take a look at our Ply Gem pricing and Simonton window cost pages for the series that we recommend.
