Aluminum window frames are incredibly strong, but are not very energy efficient. Also, Aluminum is a good choice for hot climates that require a durable, long lasting material that can stand up to the heat year after year. Awning
Awnings are rectangular or horizontal in shape and have hinges at the top, enabling the homeowner to open the window outwards from the bottom. When the window pushes open, it allows air flow. Bay And Bow
Bay windows have three or more units that are joined together at an angle. These are wonderful additions to a home, but they are expensive units to buy and install. Casement
Casement windows are one of the most popular styles out there. Specifically, the windows are hinged on one side and they open out (almost like a door). They are very popular for basements, and generally get more good energy efficiency numbers. Window Pictures: Composite
Composite windows are incredibly varied in terms of the materials such, overall look and finish. Additionally, the other factor is the company behind them - Renewal By Andersen and Amsco both make a composite window but they look and cost nothing alike. Double Hung
Double-hung windows are one of the most common styles for both new construction and replacements. Double hungs consist of two movable sashes, each of which can be opened. Double Pane
Nearly all replacement windows sold today are double pane. Also, they come into a wide variety of materials (vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass, composite and wood clad frames) and offer far superior energy efficiency compared with the single pane windows of old. To be fair, it is difficult to Fiberglass
Fiberglass window frames are plastic that is reinforced with glass fibers. A tough and energy efficient material that runs 40% more than vinyl windows. Garden Window Pictures
Garden units typically go in the kitchen, extending out from the house, and often with a one or two foot shelf. Homeowners can place one or more small plants in the space and can gaze out upon their garden or from yard. Window Pictures: Egress
Egress windows are used in basements as emergency exits that are now mandated by law. So, the window might not be all that expensive, but the project itself can be very pricey. Fixed Frames
Fixed frame windows do not open. They are energy efficient, but do not allow for any breezes in. Fixed frames will be less expensive than operable or open-able window styles. Horizontal Sliders
Consumers looking for simple bedroom windows that slide open right to left are going to love horizontal sliders. While they aren't the most energy efficient, they are quite convenient. Hurricane Windows
Any consumer looking to protect their home from severe storms or hurricanes are going to want to buy hurricane or impact windows. The laminated glass keeps heavy objects from entering the home and causing havoc from the storm. Window Pictures: Hopper
Hopper windows are hinged at the top and open out from the bottom. A very interesting style that is not used all that often for obvious reasons. Patio Doors
Patio sliding doors are often expensive, but they offer convenience and ease for accessing the back yard. Picture Windows
Homeowners looking for a large showcase window in the front of their home are going to love picture windows. While these can be small or large, most people think of large fixed frame windows that provide amazing views of a home's front yard. Soundproof Windows
These shut down outside noises by using large gaps between the panes of glass. Very expensive, but pretty important for urban locations with lots of noise that disturbs homeowners. Window Pictures: Storms
Installers place storm windows on the outside of existing windows for an added layer of protection. These are single pane aluminum or vinyl framed and usually much less expensive than impact windows. Single Hungs
Single Hung Windows have one movable part - the lower sash. Homeowners can open the sash to allow in a breeze. Generally, sing hungs are quite energy efficient today, although this was not always the case. Sunrooms
These are pretty self explanatory. Generally, sunroom projects are quite expensive - the windows themselves are no more or less pricey than normal replacement windows. Tilt Ins
Tilt ins rotate and tilt in (check out a video to see exactly how they work) to allow for easy cleaning. Generally, a very nice feature to have on double hungs. They will be a bit more expensive than standard hung windows. Vinyl Window Pictures
Vinyl windows are made of uPVC or polyvinyl chloride, which is a mixture of chlorine and ethylene. This synthetic plastic is durable, mold resistant, and strong. While early iterations of PVC for windows had issues, today's vinyl is a very good option (probably the best) for replacement windows. Window Pictures: Wood Clad
Real wood is the most aesthetic of all the frame options. However, wood-clad windows have significant drawbacks. Specifically, they are expensive, require maintenance and often do not hold up well over time. Related Topic: Windows Terminology
