ENTRY LEVEL COST MID RANGE COST PREMIUM COST
$1,000 to $2,000 $2,000 to $3,000 $3,000 to $4,500
AVG $1,500 AVG $2,500 AVG $3,750

Generally, the cost of a skylight ranges from $1,000 to $4,500 fully installed. The average vinyl skylight cost is roughly $1900 fully installed. Unlike most replacement window projects, the bulk of skylight installation cost can be in the labor (unless your skylight already exists.) With many windows and doors, the typical breakdown is 2/3 for the window (or door) and 1/3 for the cost of labor. Skylight installation cost is much more similar to bow and bay window installation cost.

My Take: The bigger the project, the more bids you should collect. With skylights and patio sliding doors, I would collect free local bids until you find the perfect mix of quality and price.

Cost Considerations

As with all window and door projects, there are lots of additional cost factors that come into play. These include the following:

size of the skylight
type of skylight
frame material
brand you choose
amount of labor
prep time on frame
where you live
required permits

The sheer number of cost factors is one reason why it’s tough to estimate prices. However, we’re going to give it our best shot in six distinct categories.

Skylight Installation Cost

The skylight installation cost will range from $400 to $2000 (this is installation only and does not include the skylight itself). This is such a big range that it really doesn’t tell you much. The big reason for the huge price range is due to the fact that replacing a skylight is relatively easy (although still more difficult than replacing a normal window). However, if a skylight has to be put into the roof, it involves quite a bit of work. This work can be quite expensive - like $2K expensive. Please note: this is for the installation only.

ENTRY LEVEL COST MID RANGE COST PREMIUM COST
$400 to $800 $800 to $1,400 $1,400 to $2,000
AVG $600 AVG $1,100 AVG $1,700

Cost According To Installation Style

When putting in a skylight, you can either do a curb or a deck mount. The less expensive option is the curb mount, which is more noticeable. They aren’t quite as nice looking as the deck mount. Deck mounted skylights are flush to the roof and are more difficult and expensive to install.

MOUNT STLYE PRICE RANGE AVG. COST
Curb Mount $200 to $1,550 $850
Wood $800 to $2,550 $1,600

Types Of Skylight

There are three basic types of skylights, which include fixed, ventilated, and tubular. Very simply, fixed skylights cannot be opened, while ventilated skylights are operable (often with a crank or turn similar to casement windows). Tubular skylights are usually smaller in size, but effectively collect natural light from the surface and channel into a room. Please note: this is for skylight only and does not include the labor costs.

TYPES OF SKYLIGHT PRICE RANGE AVG. COST
Tubular $200 to $500 $350
Fixed $250 to $900 $650
Ventilated $400 to $1200 $900

Sizing And Dimensions

The bigger the skylight the more expensive to make and usually to install. Here are some price ranges and averages for skylights based on the overall dimensions (size). Personally, I don’t find this chart all that helpful (there are much more important factors), but I don’t think it hurts to have the information. Please note: the sizes below are all in inches and this does not include the labor costs. Skylight cost only.

SIZE OF SKYLIGHT PRICE RANGE AVG. COST
25W x 25H $150 to $500 $325
25W x 41H $325 to $650 $450
33W x 33H $300 to $800 $550
49W x 49H $500 to $1,900 $1,200
33W x 57H $500 to $2,000 $1,250

Typical Sizing

Most often, skylight are 25 inches wide. This is because of how trussed roofs are framed out. Trusses are pre-manufactured roof structures that are spaced two feet apart. Stick roofs, on the other hand, are usually built on site and are much more flexible in how they are framed out. Thus, stick roofs allow for larger skylight dimensions, as well as skylight custom options, etc. This is not to say that truss roofs can’t accommodate for larger skylights, but it will require more labor and drive up skylight installation cost.

Pro Tip: Always ask the roofing company that comes out to give you a bid if they can break down the skylight installation cost and the material cost. Some companies won’t do it, but often times they will. This is a great way to compare local company cost quotes.

Skylight Material Cost

Different skylight materials have different costs associated with them. These are general price ranges for each. Please note that this is for the skylight only, and does not include skylight installation cost.

Fiberglass $350 to $1,400 $900

Skylight Cost Via Shape

Skylight costs are definitely impacted by the shape of what you intend to install. Specifically, certain shapes pose bigger installation challenges. Here we have listed the common shapes and provided price ranges and the average cost for each. Please note that these price ranges do NOT include the cost of labor to install the skylights.

SHAPE OF SKYLIGHT PRICE RANGE AVG. COST
Square $250 to $2,050 $1,100
Oval $650 to $2,550 $1,550
Circular $450 to $1,000 $750
Triangular $450 to $3,050 $1,750

Cost According To Type Of Glass

Certainly, glass affects price for the simple reason that glass is a big part of any skylight. Here we have listed the common types of skylight glass and provided price ranges and the average cost for each. Please note that these price ranges do NOT include the cost of labor to install the skylights.

The four most popular types of skylight glass include acrylic, tempered, double paned, and triple paned. Domed skylights often use acrylic glass, but they can discolor and get scratched through the years. Double and triple paned glass are the most common glass types for both skylights, as well as replacement and new construction windows. Finally, there is tempered glass, which is used on impact windows. These are the strongest options that can withstand hurricanes and severe weather systems.

GLASS TYPE PRICE RANGE AVG. COST
Acrylic Plastic $200 to $1,050 $400
Double Paned Glass $350 to $2,550 $950
Triple Paned Glass $500 to $2,850 $750
Tempered Glass $700 to $3,300 $1,850

Homeowner Q And A

Below are homeowner questions and answers related to skylight installation cost, along with homeowner quotes and bids, and window brand comparisons.

Soft-Lite SkyLight And Windows

Dane, here is a Zen Windows quote on their Classic Plus series, plus one skylight. $7.9K was the total project quote for 7 windows and one skylight replacement. So when I asked the person to breakdown the quote, they balked at first. But then they came around and said that the windows were $6K and the skylight being $1900. What do you think of this price?

[Website Editor Answers]

Anita, I think that price quote sounds pretty fair. Not necessarily cheap, but certainly not out of the fair market realm. Now, I'd like for you to check out the online company reviews for these guys and see how they compare to others.
