Black Vinyl Windows

One of the latest trends in the window and door space is black vinyl windows and/or patio doors. So this typically means a black interior and exterior. These windows and patio doors are often paired with white exterior homes or with very modern looking homes. Let's explore this new trend and dig into cost, advantages and disadvantages, and check out some of the manufacturers offering this hot new window look.

Black Vinyl Windows Cost

In the past, black vinyl frames have only been available as an optional upgrade. Specifically, this can add 30% to 35% to the cost of the window (which is a pretty huge increase). However, due to the increased demand of black vinyl windows from homeowners, some manufacturers have been offering them as a standard color, along with the old standbys like white, tan, and almond. Commonly, window manufacturers will label their black vinyl windows as a featured collection that will be more expensive than their standard series. However, they will often be less than the upgrade to a custom frame color.

Advantages

The only real advantage here is the amazing look these can bring to a home. Done well, it really is pretty stunning (in my opinion). Therefore for those homeowners who love that white on black look, this is a really welcome development.

Disadvantages

There are a few disadvantages to be aware of. The cost of these windows, which we covered, is obviously a factor. The other big issue is to be aware of is that the color black attracts heat. So is it a good idea to buy black vinyl windows in very hot climates like Texas? My own answer is probably no, although todays premium vinyl extrusions are pretty impressive. However, I would still be very wary of this move as I'm not sure we know how they will hold up over time.

In more mild climates, however, I think well made black vinyl windows are a great buy if you can take the added cost. The final issue to be aware of is the warranty timelines. Most vinyl window color frame upgrades will carry a warranty of 10 to 15 years, which means the manufacturers are kind of hedging their bets here. Therefore, my advice for consumers interested in black vinyl windows is to go with a known and well regarded window brand.

Cost Question

Hey Dane, love the website. So I have a quick question for you. Are black vinyl windows more expensive than traditional white colored frame?

Tony, so, yes, these are more expensive than white windows. Primarily, this is because white is a standard color and black is an upgrade. This is beginning to change in the industry. However, I would expect to pay more for black than white regardless.
