Disadvantages of Fiberglass Windows
Topping the list of disadvantages of fiberglass windows is certainly cost. They will typically run 35% than vinyl windows. Often, homeowners will be very keen on fiber glass UNTIL they see the price quotes when compared to their bids on vinyl windows. It’s that rather stark difference in a line item cost that really dissuades many homeowners from buying fiber glass windows.
This becomes particularly problematic because the two materials are nearly identical to one another. While fiberglass may hold up better over time, vinyl windows can last 30 years easily.
Now it must be said that fiberglass windows are not as expensive as wood clad frames. But the cost is one of the main disadvantages of fiberglass windows. In terms of strength, aesthetics, and energy efficiency -- fiber glass frames make lots of sense.
Milgard Fiberglass Windows Cost vs Apex
| Window Series | Total Quote Installed | Average Installed Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Apex Windows | $35,000 | $1,061 |

"Tim, I have a quote from Apex Energy Solutions for $35K for 32 windows and a slider. This is with the bronzed exterior ($4.5K more). I am in Portland OR and not sure if this is a good deal. I like the windows well enough the triple pane etc. But I don’t want to over spend and their “promotion” seems a little fishy. That said I had a quote for $52K for the Milgard Ultra fiberglass."

Editor's Advice:
Nathan, so you have 33 windows to replace. I am shocked that Milgard wants to charge you $48k, unless its for one of their wood clad or fiberglass clad windows. They do tend to charge alot for their exterior colors though.
Still, $35k for 33 Apex windows is pricey, although lets take out the 4.5k so that it's really $31.5K. Still pricey in my opinion (and I agree with you on their promotional pricing, although I'm sure it's effective for them).
Oregon is a tricky state for window recommendations.
I think you need one or two more bids to check against the Apex bid. What about a Simonton Reflections 5500. It's a comparable window and it might be quite a bit less.
