Kolbe Windows vs Andersen

Kolbe Windows vs Andersen - do these two well known brands stack up on company structure, what they sell, how they market, and what they cost. Let's take a closer look.

Bottom Line: Kolbe and Andersen share a lot in common and are generally considered direct competitors of one another. Kolbe is based in the state of Wisconsin, while Andersen is based a state over in Minnesota. They are both best known for their quality wood-clad windows, which are both well made and quite expensive. Kolbe Windows vs Andersen

Company Information

Kolbe Windows And Doors is based out of the state of Wisconsin and has been in the fenestration business since 1946. The company has a factory in both Wisconsin and Phoenix, Arizona - which allows them to manufacture and sell more easily across much of the United States. They are probably best known for their aluminum wood-clad windows, which are well made and quite expensive. The company enjoys quite a good reputation for producing high quality windows and doors.

They have several factories across the U.S. and will be available in all 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii. What They Sell

Kolbe sells four main window and door series. These include the VistaLuxe, Ultra, Heritage, and Forgent. The Heritage is their most popular series (sometimes reffered to as the Classic, which can be a bit confusing). I'd rate the Heritage as a very solid wood-clad window - maybe not quite as strong as the Andersen 400 series, but not far off the mark.

Andersen also sells four main window and door series. These include the 100 series, 200 series, 400 series and the Architectural series (sometimes referred to as the A series). They are best known for the 400 series, which is one of the best wood-clad windows around. In addition, they are also known for the 100 series, which is a fibrex composite, and sold through Home Depot stores across the U.S.

How They Market

Kolbe markets their window and doors in a typical fashion - that is using a good-sized network of local window and door companies across the U.S. Kolbe should have some presence in nearly all 50 states - perhaps not in Alaska and Hawaii, as well some of the southern U.S.

Andersen markets their window doors in a variety of ways - through the Home Depot big box stores across the U.S., through their extensive network of window and door companies, and through contractors and builders large and small. Their franchise, Renewal, uses a direct to consumer approach.

In general, Anderson wood-clad series will run 7 to 10 out of 10 when compared to other wood-window manufacturers. Their 100 composite series will run 5 to 6 out of 10 when compared to other composite-window manufacturers.

Kolbe Windows vs Andersen

Dane: I'd appreciate a copy of your current recommended list of windows. We're early in the process, but looking at Marvin, Pella, Anderson, and Kolbe.

[Site Editor's Answer]

Bob, Here is my list of good and great windows for you to take a look at...from the companies you mentioned, it sounds like you are looking at wood clad windows. Most of my list is vinyl to be honest as it accounts for 70% of the replacement market.

In terms of wood clad, you are right on in your companies. I tend not to love wood windows due to the longevity of the material (evidenced by the warranty on most wood windows - 20 years).

One option to consider is a high end vinyl window with a wood grain laminate interior. Worth a look I think - especially because once the wood window is treated, it doesn't look THAT much different than the real wood - at least on the inside. Outside is a different story. ( Vinyl Windows Wood Grain Look )

Fiberglass is certainly an option and Marvin, Alpen, Milgard are all good options...
