Bottom Line: Pella has been in business since 1925 and is located in Pella, Iowa. The company is best known for high-end wood clad window and doors that are also quite pricey. Milgard is a west coast brand that began in Tacoma, Washington back in 1962. "While I don’t hear as much about Milgard's C650 Ultra fiberglass series or their A250 aluminum-clad, their Tuscany and Trinsic vinyl window series are by far their biggest sellers."

Pella Windows vs Milgard

Company Information

Pella Windows and Doors has been in business since 1925 and is located in Pella, Iowa. The company is best known for high-end wood clad windows and doors that are also quite pricey. They enjoy a good reputation in the industry for their high-quality products. However, I think their fiberglass and vinyl windows leave quite a bit to be desired.

Pella Window Reviews

Milgard Windows & Doors is a west coast brand that began in Tacoma, Washington back in 1962. They are quite a bit smaller than Pella, but have a handful of manufacturing facilties spread across the western half of the United States (California, Washington State, and Arizona). Milgard was purchased recently (2018) by MITER brands (most commonly associated with MI Windows). Also similarly to Anlin, Milgard's product quality has not been affected by its acquisition.

What They Sell

Pella sells the 250 vinyl window, which is their most popular series by quite a bit. One of the main reasons is that it's sold through Lowes and their hundreds of stores across the United States. The company also sells two vinyl hurricane windows, one fiberglass series and three different wood clad series. Their premium Reserve wood-clad series is the most expensive and obviously nicest window that they make.

Milgard sells the Slimline, which is their entry level, slim-framed option. Their most popular series is the Tuscany, which is decent quality. They also sell the Trinsic, which is a more modern looking vinyl window model. The Trinsic and Tuscany should achieve relatively similar performance numbers. The company also sells their premium vinyl window series called the Homemaker. In addition to this, they also sell the Ultra fiberglass series, as well as an aluminum-clad series called the A250. While I don’t hear as much about their C650 Ultra or their A250 aluminum, the Tuscany and Trinsic are by far their biggest sellers.

How They Market

Pella markets their windows and doors using a scorched earth technique that is similar to other large manufacturers such as Andersen. They sell through the big box stores, they sell through local window distributors or companies in all 50 states, and they sell to larger developers, contractors and builders. This all encompassing approach is one of the reasons why they are so well-known and sell so many units each year.

Milgard is somewhat similar in how they sell their windows and doors. They use an extensive dealer network that stretches across much of the western half of the United States (but not into the east half of the country). They also sell to contractors and larger builders who develop large residential properties (and typically use their Styleline and Tuscany series). Milgard does not sell directly to consumers in the same way that Pella does.

Cost Comparisons

Pella Windows Cost are quite high in general. I would say the one place for this isn’t the case is with their vinyl windows, which tend to be in that 5 to 7 out of 10 for all vinyl window options. Their wood-clad series are pricey.

Pella Costs: $$$/$$$$
(3/4 out of 5)

Milgard Windows prices are in the mid range for most vinyl window manufactures. On a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of overall cost, Millard prices are 5 to 8 out of 10 in the overall vinyl window cost spectrum. Their C650 Ultra would probably be a 7 to 8 on a scale of 1 to 10 for fiberglass windows. In truth, I'm not sure expensive their A250 aluminum-clad option is.
