Double Hung Windows Cost Introduction
Double-Hung windows prices range from $400 to $2500 per window with installation. Double hungs are perhaps the most popular style available and offer lots of air flow options and great ease of cleaning. A double hung has an upper and a lower sash that can be moved up and down to allow the window to open from either the top or the bottom. They tend to run about $100 to $150 more than a comparable single hung, but have a better overall reputation as a quality style.

Double Hung Windows Prices By Project
This is our attempt to price out DHWs by project level. To be sure, alot of this dovetails with the frame materials used to make the windows. At the lower level, consumers can expect mostly vinyl windows, while at the premium price range you can expect lots of high end fiberglass and wood clad windows.
Entry Level DH Windows
Let's take a look at entry level double hung price ranges - mostly vinyl window manufacturers, which can go from $400 to $1200 fully installed. There are lots of cheap replacement windows out there and this would be the case at that lower price level. However, at that $1000 to $1200 level, there are lots of really good vinyl window manufacturers.

Let's switch to mid range double hung price points. At the very low end here you are going to have the top end vinyl windows, along with the entry level fiberglass, aluminum and composite windows. However, at the $1800 level, you're going to start to get into some of the better fiberglass and aluminum windows, along with some mid range wood clad window options.

Finally, let's go to premium double hung windows prices. At the low end of this price point, you have lower to mid range fiberglass, wood-clad and aluminum windows. At the top end, you have the very best (or simply most expensive) fiberglass, composite, and wood clad windows. Some of the following are truly excellent windows, while others are simply truly expensive.

Installation Pricing
Expect installation to range from $100 to $500 per opening. If the replacement window simply needs to be inserted into the existing opening without any work to the sills or frame, you can assume the lower end of this price range. If there are work required to the frame, sills and stops or any exterior capping etc., you can expect to pay at the upper end of the cost range.

Dear Dane How much would single pane double hung windows cost made with Douglas fir? Looking at 5’ by 3’ and need about 8 of them ? What is price for windows vs windows / installation?

Stephanie, maybe $1800 for the window and $500 for the installation. Depends on the company though. Also, local installation companies willoften bid out projects way above this though so collect 3 or 4 bids for sure. I'm happy to look at your bids and weigh in on what you have...

Home Renovation Prices
Good Evening Dane, I'm looking for some input. My wife and I started our search for replacement windows a little awhile ago, after she went to a home renovation expo. We first had Champion Windows come through with a $25k bid for 13 windows. (not a chance) We had a $45k bid for all of our windows from Renewal by Anderson. (not a chance)
Window Depot of the Upstate came through and quoted Wincore 7700 windows for all of our windows at $18,719. That's 12 Double Hung, 2 gliders, and 2 Pictures averaging $1169.94. Southern Industries came by and gave a similar quote for Wincore 7700. ZEBB Home Renovations (don't have my trust or any reputation) came around just this weekend and bid $15k flat also for Wincore 7700 windows.
Before this weekend I wasn't a well informed consumer and didn't know window brands or manufacturers. I learned about u-factor, SHGC, VT, etc. this weekend too. It seems very odd now that everyone so far offered Wincore 7700, especially when Window Depot offers Provia on their website. Their price seems closer to what I would have expected Provia Endure to cost for all my windows. Even then it still seems high.
Have prices really inflated this much? It feels like these companies are trying to take advantage of us. We are both in our twenties. Let me know what you think! I'm going to contact American Made Windows of The Upstate next. They work with ViWinTech, vinyl design, vytex, and ProVia. The product they recommend online is VYTEX FORTIS SERIES. Is this better than Provia Endure?

David, first off, you are doing a good job by collecting the bids and seeing what’s out there and getting the price quotes. Honestly, this is the only way to see what the market price in your area is — there are lots of factors that go into pricing so it’s kinda of tough to say if prices have inflated or your project requires additional work - it’s probably a bit of both I’m guessing.
Very odd on the Wincore 7700 bids, but not unheard of. Personally, I like the ProVia Windows brand over the Wincore - the ProVia Endure is a very nice unit and one that will last and perform well given a quality install. The Wincore 7700 is a good unit as well. As a brand, probably on par with ViWinTech.
I’d go back to Window Depot and inquire abt ProVia and pricing. Then collect the bid(s) from american made windows of the upstate and let’s circle back and see what we have in terms of bids. It’s a process and not always a particularly pleasant one - but I say do it once and do it right! And 12 years down the road, you’ll be happy you did.

Best Double Hung Window
I live in central Ohio and I'm looking to replace 19 30 year old original construction double hung, dual pane aluminum clad wood windows. In your opinion which of the following are best for someone that's planning to stay in the home for the next 25 years and have a budget in the $30k range, aluminum clad wood, fiberglass, vinyl or some type of composite? Is there any value between dual pane vs triple pane windows? Who are the better manufactures? I'm looking for durability, efficiency, appearance and warranty.

J. I can't really tell you what a fair price is because there are so many factors that go into most projects. That's why I always say collect 4 or 5 bids -- that's going to tell you what the market price is -- then you pick the best company with the best ratings/reviews who sells the best window at the best price...that's my formula at least...

George, I definitely like the Zen option(s) here. For me, the best window in the bunch is the Endure -- quite a big price jump from the Provia Aspect to the Endure -- I would say go with the Aspect if you are planning to be in the home for 8 years or less, go with the Endure if your timeline is over this. I should also mention that the SoftLite Classic Plus is also a good possibility. I would put the Aspect and the Classic plus on par with one another. Kind of a coin flip for me and I think this is reflected in the price point similarity in the bids.
