Jeld Wen Windows vs Pella

Jeld Wen Windows vs Pella - how do they compare - let's take a closer look at these two titans of the window and door industry.

Bottom Line: Jeld Wen tends to pale in comparison to Pella in most areas, although Pella is going to be the more expensive pound-for-pound. Jeld Wen and Pella both make good wood windows (Jeld Wen because of their Auralast protection, and Pella for the overall beauty of their products.) Jeld Wen makes a very solid door, while Pella really doesn't stand out in this category.

My Take On These Companies: I'm not sure I'd get a bid from either of these companies on their vinyl window options. I would get a bid from both on their wood clad windows. However, I always suggest consumers really look at how vinyl windows compare to wood windows before they pull the trigger on wood clad. Hint: there are lots of disadvantages to wood windows.

Jeld Wen Windows vs Pella : Company Info

Jeld Wen is a well-known U.S. brand in the window and door industry that has been in the space for over 100 years. They have over 23K employees, making them one of the largest companies in the industry. In terms of reputation, Jeld Wen enjoys a good overall standing. However Pella definitely beats them out in the reputation department. Jeld Wen makes vinyl and wood clad windows. Their vinyl windows tend to be pretty low end quality, while their premium aluminum and wood clad windows are good quality overall. Jeld Wen makes a very good door and this is where they stand out in my opinion.

Pella Windows has the better name recognition than Jeld Wen, and the better overall reputation as well. Most of this perception is due to the fact that Pella sells a very pretty wood window, and is best known for this by both consumers and industry insiders. The company has been in the window and door business for over 100 years and sells in all 50 states. While the company is best known for wood clad windows, they also sell impact windows, vinyl, and fiberglass window series.

What They Sell

Jeld Wen sells windows and doors in the following materials - vinyl and wood clad series. Here is a brief recap of each. On the vinyl front, Jeld Wen sells the V-2500 and V-4500 window series. Neither of these windows is considered all that great, but the V-4500 would be my call between the two. On the wood front, the company sells the EpicVue, Siteline, and W-5500 series. All of these are treated with something called Auralast and they come with a lifetime warranty on the wood frame, which is more or less unheard of in the industry. I love the fact that the company stands behind their wood windows. Not many of them do (or not for all that long.)

Pella sells windows and doors in the following three materials - vinyl, fiberglass, and wood. On the vinyl front, Pella sells the Encompass and the 250. The Encompass is a low end vinyl window that I would not buy, while the 250 series is a good mid range vinyl window. The 250 is a marked improvement over what they used to sell. On the fiberglass front, Pella sells the Impervia, which is not a very good fiberglass window in my opinion and should probably be avoided. On the wood front, they sell the Lifestyles, Architect, and Reserve series. The Architect is the one you want (although if you can afford the Reserve, go for it).

How They Market

Jeld Wen markets their products in much the same way as Pella does (most of the well established companies do.) They sell their low end windows in the big box stores like Home Depot and many of their better windows in stores like Dixieline etc. They sell all of their windows and doors using local window companies and they have a presence in all 50 U.S. states. Finally, they sell directly to developers who install their windows and doors (mostly their lower end offerings) in their larger residential projects.

Pella is a large, well established company that markets their windows and doors using a number of different methods. They sell their popular 250 series in the hundreds of Lowes stores across the country. They also sell through local companies or distributors throughout the 50 United States. Finally, they sell to contractors and or to developers who then sell or install them to the homeowner or end user.
