Editor's Okna 400 Window Review

The Okna 400 Precision Weld is their economy or entry level window that is definitely one of the best "entry level windows" out there. Consumers can expect some good numbers, including a.28 U-value, .30 SHGC, and a .05 air infiltration. It's this last number that is so impressive, AI measures how much air gets through a window and this is an excellent number. While it's true that the upgraded Okna windows get a lower air infiltration number, it's hard to find many windows on the market that offers such solid numbers.

The Okna Precision Weld uses a slightly thinner extrusion that some homeowners prefer because it provides a bit more glass area, but it does takes away from the overall energy efficiency of the window. The 400 series doesn't offer quite the same options in terms of hardware and frame colors that are available for the upgraded 500 and 800 series. In addition to the extrusion, the 400 also differs from the 500 series in a few little details, including weatherstripping, utility groove, and the overall feel of the window (the 400 feels a bit less sturdy.)

Okna offers two packages the Standard and Deluxe. The Deluxe includes foam fills in the sash and frame, as well as a locking screen. These are quite nice features to have and I think the upgraded package is worth the added cost.

Okna 400 vs Soft Lite Imperial LS windows

Hi Tim, I have narrowed it down to the Okna 400 and the Soft Lite Imperial LS windows. My house is 8 years old and has Patriot windows that are starting to fail in some rooms. We have a ton of windows and are looking to replace a room or two at a time as the windows are huge and, therefore, pricey. The Okna 400 was quoted at about $840 a window (upgraded to deluxe with foam and low e) and the Soft Lite Imperial LS was quoted at about $1050 a window (both have to have tempered glass on lower sash). The Soft Lite seemed much nicer. I'm wondering if the price differential is worth it. I'd appreciate any advice you can provide.

[Site Editor's Response]

Tracy, you have two excellent window selections to begin with, so that right there is a victory (I only say this because other homeowners are trying to choose between Window World and something they found at Lowes). You are correct that the Soft Lite Imperial LS is the better window of the two. The Soft Lite Imperial LS is one of the best vinyl windows on the market, I might put it in the top 3. The Okna 400 is good, but it isn't as good as the Imperial LS.

So the question now is, is the price difference worth it? I would say yes it is. Gosh, a $1050 a window is a tough pill to swallow, they must be big. I think over the life of the window, the price difference is going to be absolutely worth it. So, in terms of windows, that would be my choice.

Now what about the installation? Do you feel as comfortable with the Soft-Lite installer as the Okna installer? Installation goes a long ways to providing energy efficiency over the life of the window so make sure that you are using someone who doesn't take short cuts and are very precise and accurate in their installation. If you get this part right, you can't go wrong with whichever window you select.

Okna 400 vs 500 Series

Hi Dane, I am looking to install the OKNA windows and have requested the installer in my area about the 500 series. He told me the 500 is not used for replacement windows but for new construction. Yet I see from a number of reviews this is not so. They only carry the 400 and can obtain the 800 but they informed me there is minimal difference.

From what I read I feel like u am not being provided full disclosure. How do I find an installer who carries the 500 series. I live in Easton PA.

Kind regards,

Ann - Homeowner - from 2015

[Site Editor's Response]

Ann, the 500 Series or Insul Tec is listed right on their website under replacement windows so unless something has changed with their line up that I am unaware of, I don't what he's talking about. Yes, something seems a bit off about the person you are working with.

I tried to contact Okna, but I couldn't get an actual person on the phone to see if anything has changed. I would suggest filling in your information on their website and see what they come back with in terms of installers in your area. I would also suggest getting a couple of additional bids, Sunrise and Soft-Lite should be in your area.
